How to label media for a Data Job Shop order
Clear labels matter most when an order contains source media that must not be overwritten, multiple groups of destination media, or many tiny SD and microSD cards.
Put the order number in the package
Include the DJS order number with the shipment. A simple piece of paper inside the package is enough. The order number is what ties the physical media to the approved job.
Mark source media clearly
If one device contains the master files or any data that must not be overwritten, mark it clearly as SOURCE – DO NOT OVERWRITE. For a USB drive, a small removable label on the plastic housing is fine. Do not cover connectors or ventilation openings.
Use bags or containers for tiny cards
For SD and especially microSD cards, it is usually better to label a small bag, case or container than to put a thick sticker directly on every card. Keep groups separated if different groups have different instructions.
Label destination drives for consolidation
If you are sending an external HDD or SSD as the destination for a consolidation job, mark it DESTINATION. If there are two destination drives, label them clearly so there is no ambiguity.
Do not invent a complicated numbering system unless you need one
If all 100 destination USB drives receive the same files, they do not need 100 unique labels for Data Job Shop. Keep the batch together and identify the group. Only use individual labels when the devices actually need to remain distinguishable.
A simple package example
- Paper inside box: DJS-20260914-XXXXXX
- One USB in a separate bag: SOURCE – DO NOT OVERWRITE
- Bag containing 100 blank USB drives: DESTINATIONS – 100
