How to format a USB drive in Windows
Formatting is straightforward for one drive. The important part is choosing the right file system and remembering that formatting can erase the files already on the device.
Basic steps
- Connect the USB drive and wait for Windows to recognize it.
- Open File Explorer, select This PC, then find the USB drive.
- Right-click the USB drive and choose Format.
- Choose the file system you need, optionally enter a volume label, and leave Quick Format selected for an ordinary format.
- Check the drive letter and capacity one more time, then start the format.
FAT32, exFAT or NTFS?
FAT32
Very widely compatible, especially with older devices, but an individual file cannot exceed 4 GB. Windows may also limit FAT32 formatting options on larger drives.
exFAT
A common choice for removable media when you need files larger than 4 GB and broad compatibility with modern Windows and macOS systems.
NTFS
Windows-focused and useful when the drive is mainly used with Windows systems. Some appliances, cameras, embedded devices and other hardware may not support it.
When one drive becomes 100 drives
Doing this manually is fine for one or two devices. If you have dozens or hundreds that need the same format or volume name, Data Job Shop offers batch formatting of customer-supplied USB, SD and microSD media.
